One of the first centres in the White Rose group was in Huddersfield. The centre worked hard over a number of years to build its reputation and to confirm its place in the training offer in the region. It is definitely now a firm fixture known for high quality training and standards. The Huddersfield Centre comprises of three salons, one theory room, two media studios and a nail studio. There is also a large student common room which is respected and looked after by the students. A job board is located in this area along with copies of the College’s newsletter.
There are good use of case studies highlighting previous students who have progressed on to a variety of careers including the ships or into salons, these are motivational and aspirational for the students and visitors.
The college is ideally located close to public transport networks, car parking facilities and the town centre. The décor is pleasant, ambient and the facilities are well maintained. The curriculum is wide and diverse and it centres around three disciplines, Beauty Therapy, Complementary therapy and Photographic/Fashion make-up.
The centre has excellent employment links with salons and spas throughout Huddersfield and many of their 16-18-year-old learner gain fulltime employment at the end of their first year. In fact, ten learners have been offered advanced apprenticeships for level 3 Beauty Therapy following successful work placement. The ideal scenario! The learner’s skills are further honed through comprehensive enrichment courses which allow them to study for a work ready qualification in their chosen discipline
and they can also gain further training certified by the prestigious Beauty Guild.
The Complementary students provided Reflexology treatments for the staff and carers at the Brian Jackson Children’s centre. Forty-five treatments were carried out that day and the feedback was wonderful, a great boost for their staff and also the White Rose students.
However, whilst the beauty therapy and complementary therapies provision is well established, the centre is really getting its name on the map for high quality training in Fashion, Media and Photographic make-up.
Thanks to the Groups resident roving make-up expert Pamela Claire (PC), the team at White Rose Huddersfield have been able to get involved with several prestigious end of year activities at the UK’s best University which is in……. Huddersfield! For example, the University’s Diploma in Textiles students completed their end of year portfolio through a photo shoot and White Rose make-up students designed the make-up to complement the outfit.
In addition, Huddersfield University have an end of year Graduate fashion show, this was an unbelievable opportunity for the students to provide hair and make-up services. The make-up students were given a detailed style brief to follow for the theme of the show. The excellent professionalism of the make-up students was commented and they worked as part of the team alongside the designers. These important links with the University also gave the Study Programme learners aged 16-18 , the chance to provide the make-up for the end of year costume design show. The brief was very different for each character and the students worked amazingly well in difficult cramped back stage area. Wonderful experiences in real working life situations, working to live briefs and a great opportunity for the students. The Centre is looking forward to a long and rewarding relationship with the university and clearly it is mutually beneficial.
Make-up has been key for enrichment and the talented make-up tutors arranged for the learners to work back stage at the Leeds Direct Arena on the Cherish conference! Over, 7,000 women watched the performance of The Greatest Showman, and the make up for this prestigious show was carried out by White Rose students!
To cap the success of the make-up courses the centre also had entries into the make-up artistry awards at NEC Birmingham and came away with two wins in the Bridal and theatrical themed section. The make-up team work with a number of key popular industry brands and our students benefit from company training and workshops, including NYX, Urban Decay. The beauty therapy students benefit from using Dermalogica and receive its comprehensive product knowledge training. Learners also
have opportunity for Spray Tan training with St Tropez, Individual Lashes with My Lash, Lash Lift, pregnancy massage to name but a few, all of which are very popular with employers, and therefore enhances employability in the industry as well as enrichment opportunities for to students.
Thinking of a career in one of these disciplines ………… give Huddersfield a call!
